Research Interests

Areas of academic, scientific and professional interest focus on three areas: (1) Vocational Training and Adult Education, (2) Local Development and (3) Social and Solidarity Economy. Specifically, in terms of research, his concerns have been oriented towards (1) Dimensions / issues of participation in vocational training and adult education, (2) Problems related to sustainable local development, (3) social in(ex)clusion, (4) Social Impact Assessment of Programs and Projects (educational and local development) (5) Issues related to equal opportunities, specifically gender specific issues.

Bio

PhD degree (1987) and Master (1984) in Continuous and Vocational Education by University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and conducted aggregation tests in Development and Rural Extension in 2005 at the University of Évora. Degree in Agronomy (1974) from the University of Luanda. At the University of Évora, he served as Chairman of the Department of Sociology (2005-2008), Pro-Rector for Continuous Education (1994), Deputy Dean (1995-1998) and Sociology Master director (1994/95 and 2005/08). In the scope of his teaching and research activities, he has supervised more than 100 undergraduate monographs, more than 50 master’s theses and nine doctoral theses, presented 98 papers in Conferences and Congresses and participated in more than 6 dozens of projects financed by the European Union and by the Portuguese State, on continuing training, rural development, gender equality and social exclusion at national and European level.

He is a full professor at FCSEA (ULHT). He was Director of CPES between 2009 and July 2016 and is currently Vice-President of the Researcher’s plenary. He is the Director of the Graduate Program in Social and Solidarity Economy and Local Development and the MBA in Rural Extension. Expert in the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission, in the evaluation of research proposals submitted under the H2020 (From 2015); in 2017 of the Societal Challenge Program 6 ‘Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective societies’ (H2020-SC6-2017).

Research Interests

Communication, more specifically, advertising, focusing on the symbolic dimension of its discourse. Sociology of consumption, with special focus on youth context. Interest in the sociological practices and representations of consumption, including in the identity construction of individuals, and the role that brands and advertising can hold in consumer processes. Also interested in the issues affecting the corporeity present in advertising discourse.

Bio

Lecturer of curricular units linked to advertising (ULHT), she has given research workshops in the area of communication (CIES-IUL, ISCTE-IUL). PhD degree in Sociology (ISCTE-IUL), in the area of consumption, Masters in Communication, Culture and Information Technologies (ISCTE-IUL) and a degree in Communication and Culture Sciences (ULHT). It has several formations related to the creativity. Several articles published (with scientific arbitration) and presentation of papers in congresses, colloquia and national and international conferences.
